Magyar- Angol nyelvű At 15:00 on 14 January 1991, the 37-man Hungarian Military Medical Contingent arrived at its duty station in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Three days later, in the early morning hours of 17 January, the First Gulf War started. Fought in the Persian Gulf with modern military equipment, this conventional war had its centuries-long antecedents in the Middle East, and, regrettably, its tragic consequences, too, which continue to crucially influence the region to the present day. The outlining of the above provides a frame to the Gulf War story of the first - and, also from the country's viewpoint, important - mission of the Hungarian military medical service after the 1989 regime change. Contingent Commander Lt.-Gen. (MD) Dr. László Svéd's memoirs draw on his contemporary notes, former official documents and original illustrations, and are complemented with scholarly research. They tell the story of the events that occurred 30 years ago - including the role and accomplishments of the Hungarian team - in a professional and at once exciting way.
